This article contains spoilers for FBI: International season 4, episode 1.FBI: International near the end of season 3. Although Chicago Med alum Colin Donnell stepped in as an NSA agent during the final two episodes of the season, his character was not the team's new leader.

An FBI: International season 4 cast update during the summer revealed that Chicago PD alum Jesse Lee Soffer would play Wes Mitchell, the new leader of the Fly Team, but did not provide any information about him other than his name. This led to widespread speculation about how Mitchell would be introduced and whether the audience would be able to successfully separate him from his former role. The FBI: International season 4 season premiere answered these questions while also giving Mitchell a compelling backstory.

Jesse Lee Soffer's Wes Mitchell Replaces Luke Kleintank's Scott Forrester In FBI: International Season 4

Mitchell Brings A Different Vibe To The Fly Team Than Forrester Did

Wes Mitchell's on-screen introduction in the FBI: International season 7 premiere involves a high-speed chase in Los Angeles which results in his partner, Michael, getting shot by an armed robber. Mitchell did not come to Hungary because he intended to be a permanent leader. Instead, he wanted the Fly Team's help catching the international criminals who killed Michael in Los Angeles so that he could get revenge. This dramatic, rebellious energy is a marked contrast to Forrester's level-headed and diplomatic approach to dealing with local police over the past three seasons.

Vo knows him [Mitchell] well, which is why she trusted him enough to push him to become the permanent team leader after the case was closed.

Although Mitchell arrived with an agenda, he did have a connection to the Fly Team through Vo, who was once his mentee. Thus, Vo knows him well, which is why she trusts him enough to push him to become the permanent team leader after the case was closed at the end of the episode. This sets up a different dynamic than if the FBI chose a new leader who was a stranger to the entire team, although the will still have to adjust to Mitchell's higher-energy leadership style and decide for themselves whether they trust him.

Soffer Previously Played Jay Halstead In Chicago PD

This Is Soffer's First Big Role Since His One Chicago Exit

Jesse Lee Soffer as Jay Halstead in Chicago PD season 10

Soffer played Jay Halstead, one of the main detectives on Chicago PD for 10 years, which is an interesting wrinkle considering that both that show and FBI: International are part of the shared One Chicago universe. Halstead left Chicago after season 10 to fight drug cartels in Bolivia. Although this was a disappointing exit story, it also made it possible for Halstead to come to Budapest. That said, Wolf Entertainment writers decided to create a new character for Soffer instead.

FBI: International has established that Mitchell is an LAPD officer. Thus, he shares a similar background with Halstead as well as some similar personality traits, such as impulsiveness. Over time, however, Mitchell will hopefully show more of his own personality, making it easier for Soffer to differentiate this character from the one he previously played.
