Bosch: Legacy will conclude with three seasons and 30 episodes (compared to Bosch's 7 seasons and 68 episodes).

Bosch: Legacy season 3 premieres with four episodes on Thursday, March 27, 2025, on Amazon Freevee and Amazon Prime Video. Season 3 contains 10 episodes, and following its premiere, Amazon will release two episodes every Thursday until the finale on April 17.

Of course, the news surrounding Bosch: Legacy's cancelation is quite disappointing. Three seasons and 30 episodes doesn't seem like a lot, especially when the original TV show ran for seven seasons and almost 70 episodes. Nevertheless, Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Freevee are parting ways with the Bosch sequel series after its third season airs in the spring of 2025.

According to Deadline, Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Freevee announced that Bosch: Legacy season 3 would serve as the show's ending in September 2024, six months before its premiere. At first, it was unknown why Amazon axed the police procedural series. Creator/executive producer Michael Connelly released a statement when news of Bosch: Legacy's cancelation broke. In it, he remarked:

"I am so proud of what we have accomplished with this show. Ten years ago, I asked Titus Welliver if he could stick with Harry Bosch for five seasons, and he said he could do it forever. Well, five became 10, and the character, thanks to Titus, will live forever in the hearts of viewers and in the streaming world as the detective who knows that everybody counts or nobody counts."

Unfortunately, Connelly didn't provide an explanation as to why Amazon was cutting Bosch: Legacy short. And despite fan petitions, Amazon is sticking by its decision. However, as time went on after the news broke, it has become clear that money likely played a significant role in the company choosing to end Bosch: Legacy after season 3. The TV show's production costs might have gotten too high for Amazon, which is why they are parting ways with Bosch: Legacy. So, despite the Bosch sequel series' success, season 3 will be its last outing.

Bosch: Legacy Is Already Reaching The End Of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch Books

There Are 25 Books In The Harry Bosch Series

Perhaps another reason why the Amazon Prime Video/Amazon Freevee police procedural TV show is coming to an end with season 3 is the lack of source material. Each season of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy is based on a novel from Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch book series. With 10 total seasons under its belt, the TV franchise is running out of novels from which to pull inspiration. Bosch: Legacy season 3 will be based on Connelly's 2022 Harry Bosch book Desert Star. After that, only one book remains in the series — The Waiting, which was published in 2024.

Plus, The Waiting shifts the focus more onto Detective Renée Ballard rather than Harry Bosch. Given that Titus Welliver's Harry Bosch is the central figure in the 2022 TV series, it would make sense for Amazon to move away from this corner of the fictional universe just as the books are. As a result, Bosch: Legacy season 3 feels like a natural end for the show. However, it won't be the end of the TV franchise and Amazon's partnership.

The Bosch Universe Is Still Continuing At Amazon With The Renée Ballard Spinoff

Maggie Q Plays Detective Renée Ballard

Before Amazon canceled Bosch: Legacy, the company announced that a new spinoff centered around Detective Renée Ballard (who works in the Cold Case Division of the LAPD) was in development. Maggie Q will star as Detective Ballard in the show. However, the actress will make her debut as the Harry Bosch character in Bosch: Legacy season 3, setting up her spinoff, which is set to premiere in the fall of 2025.

Titus Welliver is expected to reprise his role as Harry Bosch in the show.

As of the writing of this article, an official title for the Ballard series hasn't been announced. As for the untitled Renée Ballard Bosch spinoff's cast list, though, Maggie Q will be ed by John Carroll Lynch as retired detective Thomas Laffont, Courtney Taylor as Samira Parker. Other stars include Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, and Amy Hill. Of course, Titus Welliver is expected to reprise his role as Harry Bosch in the show. Connelly promised that Bosch would return in the spinoff in his statement concerning Bosch: Legacy's cancelation, after all.
