Behind-the-scenes shots from filming on Titans season 4 now confirm the familiar DC city of Blüdhaven as a brand-new setting. Whether Brenton Thwaites' Dick Grayson and his plucky followers simply visit Blüdhaven or relocate there permanently remains to be seen, but the fictional city's importance to DC lore means it's surely more than just an Easter egg.
In DC's comics, Blüdhaven is where Dick Grayson heads after switching from Robin to Nightwing. Escaping the shadow of Batman, Dick gets his own city as a playground, brimming with its own problems, crimes, and supervillains. The New Jersey locale has echoes of Gotham - both are waterfront cities struggling with poverty - and other of the Bat-family Dick over time, including Tim Drake's Robin and Batgirl. Nevertheless, Blüdhaven's main purpose as a Bruce-free zone for Batman's most famous student remains constant.
Titans' season 3 finale pretty clearly confirmed Dick Grayson was relocating his team back to whatever remained of Titan Tower in San Francisco. The closing moments of "Purple Rain" see Dick, Tim Drake, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, Superboy and Kypto all bundle into an RV ready for the long ride from Gotham City back to the Golden City. As such, Titans season 4 probably won't begin with Nightwing and co. already living in Blüdhaven. Instead, the Titans may be drawn there by reports of some nefarious new supervillain. Dick then gradually realizes the city needs a Batman-esque protector and decides to stick around, making Blüdhaven his very own Gotham as per the comic books.
What Blüdhaven Means For Titans' Future
Intriguingly, Titans season 4's behind-the-scenes props show a banner reading "Blüdhaven University orientation: Welcome to your future." Dick Grayson might be a little old for frat parties, but Titans season 4 could see Teagan Croft's Raven, Jay Lycurgo's Tim Drake and/or Ryan Potter's Beast Boy starting college in an attempt to enjoy some semblance of normal life between disasters. Raven learned to control her abilities by the end of Titans season 3, so Dick might've deemed her safe to unleash upon the education system. What could possibly go wrong?
Titans season 4's Blüdhaven setting is also good news for those hoping Lex Luthor might finally show up. Superman's nemesis lingered in the background of Titans season 2, then Bruce Wayne alluded toward Lex causing trouble during a season 3 scene. DC's baldest villain hasn't shown up in person, but Titans director Nicholas Copus recently shared an image on social media showing season 4's prep book... with Lex Luthor on the cover. One of Blüdhaven's biggest storylines involves Alexander Luthor and the Secret Society of Supervillains destroying the city in a chemical attack, so Blüdhaven's presence in Titans season 4 makes an appearance from a member of the Luthor family even more likely.
Visiting Blüdhaven solves a problem caused by Titans' season 3 finale. With Scarecrow finally defeated, most of the gang returned to San Francisco, but the likes of Barbara Gordon, Wonder Girl, and Red Hood all stayed behind in Gotham City. It wasn't immediately clear how Titans season 4 would reintegrate these characters with such a huge geographical distance between the cast, but since Blüdhaven is pretty near Gotham, the city could easily reunite Dick's group from San Francisco with those who stayed behind at the end of Titans season 3.
