Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Winchesters season 1, episode 13All American has been renewed so far, leaving the fate of The Winchesters in question. It also competes against Walker, Walker: Independence, Kung Fu, Superman & Lois, Gotham Knights, and All American: Homecoming. Unfortunately, there are too many shows and not enough slots for all series to get renewed.

Dean Winchester's return in The Winchesters episode 13 explains how the show fits into Supernatural. It has now been established that The Winchesters is in a different universe. Dean Winchester is also in heaven and was exploring the multiverse when he came across these Winchesters. He also discovered the Akrida, which Chuck created before he died, in case he failed to wipe out humanity. The Akrida was not only going to wipe out this universe but all universes. This prompted Dean to get involved.

These Winchesters Have A Chance At A Happy Ending

Samantha Smith and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Mary and John Winchester Holding Each Other in Supernatural

Besides Dean Winchester wanting to save all universes, especially the one with Sam Winchester living out his life, he wanted to find a version of his family that could have a happy ending. This is why he gave John Winchester the letter, even though he wasn’t supposed to get involved. Fortunately, Dean’s involvement has given Mary and John a chance at a happy ending. And maybe this time, John won't repeat Mary's worst fear.

Dean wasn’t the only Supernatural character appearing in The Winchesters episode 13. Bobby and Jack also had cameos. Jack wasn’t happy with Dean’s actions but understood why he did it. Jack also allowed Dean to finish the job. He gave Dean his journal and the colt, which he ed on to Mary and John. He told John that he lived his life by his father’s journal and John should do the same with his. Dean told Mary about the Yellow-eyed demon and told her to use the colt if she ever encountered him. This Mary and John are set up better for success than Supernatural’s John and Mary were.

The Winchesters Wise To Wrap It Up When Future Uncertain

Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly as John and Mary in The Winchesters finale

The Winchesters could take Mary, John, Carlos, Lata, Millie, and Ada’s stories much further. For example, there wasn't a chance to explore Lata's heartbreaking secret with Mary and John. Unfortunately, with the uncertainty of the show’s future, it wouldn’t have been right to leave the season finale on a cliffhanger. So many shows get canceled with cliffhangers and never get to give closure to fans. Not all shows can be as lucky as Veronica Mars to return seven years later with a movie and then five years later with a fourth season. This ending for The Winchesters ensures no matter what happens. Fans get the closure they want.

Not only do Mary and John have a chance at a happy ending, Lata even finds a way to restore Ada’s soul. It’s clear Lata and Carlos will continue to help people through hunting. Lata may have ended her pacifist streak, but she will only fight when she needs to. For the most part, she will use research and knowledge to fight. It seems Like Millie will help, too, even if John isn’t the picture since it's clear that all the grandparents are in the Supernatural business. She will advise Lata and Carlos like she’s been doing with John. It’s a nice way to all The Winchesters characters if this is the end.
