Wind River 2 gets a new update from star Kali Reis, who expresses uncertainty about its release. After the success of Taylor Sheridan's Wind River in 2017, it was announced in 2022 that a sequel from director Kari Skogland was on the way. The Wind River: The Next Chapter story is expected to follow U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service officer Chip Hanson (Martin Sensmeier) as he works with the FBI to solve a series of ritualistic murders on a Native American reservation. Though filming on the movie wrapped in 2023, few updates on the project have emerged since.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant at the Sundance Film Festival to promote her new movie, Rebuilding, Reis reveals that she's not sure what's going on with Wind River 2. The actor expresses excitement about the sequel, but shares that she doesn't know when it might actually come out. Check out Reis' comment below:

You know just as much as I do, unfortunately. I am really excited about Wind River 2, as well. So just keep your eye out for it, and I can't wait to share it with the world.

Reis recently starred opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country on HBO.

It's not entirely clear why Wind River 2 is experiencing such a delay. It's possible that the film needed substantial reshoots, but there have been no reports of additional photography taking place. With two years having elapsed since filming wrapped, the lack of any concrete news could suggest that the movie isn't coming together in the edit or that the production has been affected by behind-the-scenes trouble. Either way, delays this long aren't usually a good sign.

Sequel To Taylor Sheridan's 2017 Movie Is Making A Mistake His Other Franchise Avoided

Taylor Sheridan has an sequel to his 2017 movie Wind River in development, but it looks to be making a mistake his other franchise avoided.

When the sequel does eventually come out, the first Wind River has set a high bar for success. Sheridan's 2017 film, which starred Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, has an 87% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% audience score, with praise in reviews levied at the film's central mystery, performances, and atmosphere. At the box office, Wind River grossed $43 million against a budget of only $11 million. Sheridan didn't return to write the sequel, with the script instead hailing from Patrick Massett and John Zinman.

Sheridan is best known for creating the Yellowstone universe, but he's also written projects like Sicario (2015) and Hell or High Water (2016).

More Information Could Be On The Way

It's not necessarily surprising that Reis doesn't have any inside information on the Wind River 2 situation, but her uncertainty about the movie certainly doesn't inspire confidence. Still, the cast for the sequel is impressive, with Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood, Alan Ruck, and Gil Birmingham all appearing. Birmingham and Sensmeier are the only two returning actors from the original, and their inclusion hopefully means certain themes and ideas from Sheridan's movie will be returning as well.

With filming having wrapped two years ago, more information on Wind River 2 could arrive over the next few months. It could even end up being released this year. The longer the wait for an announcement, though, the more concern about Wind River 2 there is sure to be.
