While the Winter Soldier (aka Bucky Barnes) are two of the most skilled soldiers in the Marvel Universe, the Winter Soldier proved his superiority by destroying the Punisher with just two brutal sentences. No literal shots had to be fired for Winter Soldier to win this victory, though shots were absolutely fired verbally speaking, and when they were, the Punisher didn’t know what hit him.
In Original Sin #4 by Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato a number of Marvel’s heroes are pitted against each other after Uatu the Watcher was assassinated and multiple groups are trying to figure out who did it. During these intersecting investigations, the vigilantes who have signed up for the mission are forced to engage in brutal standoffs, including the Winter Soldier and the Punisher. While most of the conflicts are physically violent, the one between the Punisher and the Winter Soldier is emotionally so, as the Winter Soldier took things way too far in regards to the Punisher’s deceased family.
In a Reddit thread started by Winter Soldier had no chill in this issue and fans took notice. Reddit Komenja17 commented in the thread, “Bucky Barnes: The Winter Savage,” and sarcastic_stoner followed that comment up with, “I think you mean, Bucky Burns.”
Even though the Winter Soldier’s comment to the Punisher was a brutal one, he isn’t the only vigilante who has let Frank have it in recent comics. In a more popular conversational exchange between the Punisher and Moon Knight, Frank asks Marc how his imaginary god is, referring to the Moon God Khonshu who gave Moon Knight his powers. Moon Knight replies by saying, “He’s good. How’s your dead family?”
While Moon Knight’s comment is brutal, it seemed as though Moon Knight and the Punisher were having almost a friendly back-and-forth rather than actually trying to be hurtful. What the Winter Soldier said to the Punisher was a verbal assault, one that he believed was warranted given the fact that Frank was threatening to shoot him. However, fans are in complete agreement that the Winter Soldier did not have to go that far, hitting the Punisher where it hurts without holding back in the slightest and absolutely destroying him with two brutal sentences.
