When CD Projekt Red dives back into The Witcher universe with more games, the developer should consider making one with Gaunter O'Dimm as the protagonist. The antagonist for the The Witcher 3's first expansion, Hearts of Stone, O'Dimm immediately captured the attention of players thanks to the aura of mystery surrounding him. That, coupled with a haunting performance by voice actor Alex Norton, made for a character rivaled only by Geralt in of popularity. As the leading man in his own game, O'Dimm could shine even more.
Players first meet O'Dimm at the very beginning of the base game in a strange but seemingly insignificant exchange. Geralt is looking for Yennefer - a romanceable character in Witcher 3 along with Triss - and his search leads him to a tavern in White Orchard. There, he approaches a man and asks if he's seen her, describing her physical appearance. To Geralt's surprise, the man knows her full name. He introduces himself as Gaunter O'Dimm, a mangy vagrant who was once a merchant of mirrors. O'Dimm says he knows her through the ballads of Dandelion, another one of Geralt's friends. After telling Geralt her last whereabouts, O'Dimm leaves the inn and tells Geralt that perhaps one day, the roles will be reversed and it will be Geralt helping him.
O'Dimm does not appear again until the beginning of Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone, when he seemingly appears from nowhere aboard a ship carrying Geralt to be hanged. He rescues the witcher, and the two enter a pact that drives the main story of the expansion. What makes O'Dimm so captivating is his omnipresence throughout the expansion and scope of his power that amplifies with each scene. He's able to freeze time and gives the impression that he's all-knowing; he can be seen in the background of several cutscenes throughout both it and Witcher 3: Blood and Wine as Mirror Merchant to show the player he's always watching; and the three capital letters of his name spell "god." Still, little is know of his exploits before meeting Geralt, and that area is ripe with opportunities.
What A Gaunter O'Dimm Witcher 3 Spinoff Might Look Like
Geralt learns in the main quest that records of O'Dimm sowing chaos around the world have existed for thousands of years. Under multiple names, including Master Mirror and the Man of Glass, he's made a habit of trapping humans with his deceptive pacts and consuming their souls as a result. One potential idea for an O'Dimm spinoff would be to show some of those moments before he met Geralt. Crafting the game as a kind of anthology, it would have the player briefly explore several eras and realms to witness O'Dimm's mischief through the eyes of different characters from The Witcher games. Although the player needs no further proof, it would show why O'Dimm has been referred to as evil incarnate.
Another possibility lies in the only other person to have bested Master Mirror. One of the endings to Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone involves Geralt solving a riddle to banish O'Dimm, making him just the second person to do so. Professor Shakeslock, another Hearts of Stone character, briefly mentioned this person when talking to Geralt about his incessant research on O'Dimm on behalf of Olgierd von Everec. This person has not been named, which could make for a grand reveal. Perhaps it could even be another witcher from The Witcher 3.
For now, though, CD Projekt Red is seemingly focused on Cyberpunk 2077's current-gen upgrade. While actively trying to improve performance, the studio is also putting the finishing touches on the game's own major expansions. Though busy at the moment, CD Projekt developers have said in the past there will eventually be a return to the world of The Witcher after Cyberpunk 2077. It seems inevitable that The Witcher 3's most powerful and peculiar character will return, as well.
