CD Projekt Red recently announced a remake of the first Unreal Engine 5 Witcher remake will hopefully breathe new life into the aging adventure.
While the original Witcher game set firm foundations for the trilogy, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings dramatically improved and changed the series' action RPG gameplay. Combat was largely overhauled, with Geralt gaining a wide range of new offensive and defensive moves to make slaying monsters much more engaging. In the sequel the White Wolf is capable of using bombs, traps and ranged weapons to enhance his hunts, which more accurately reflects his monster hunting skills than the first game did. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt improved upon the series' core gameplay even more, with players hunting creatures across an expansive open world and engaging in a variety of different optional quests.
With multiple new Witcher games in development, fans will likely be eager to replay the original trilogy in anticipation of CD Projekt Red's next saga. Unfortunately, the first Witcher game is very frustrating to revisit after playing its sequels due to its clunky controls and lackluster combat system. While the title's story is an essential introductory chapter in Geralt's video game adventures, its gameplay mechanics and graphics make it the black sheep of the trilogy. Thankfully, the remake from Polish studio Fool's Theory will enhance the title with modern graphics and will presumably deliver gameplay upgrades to make the 2007 action RPG actually exciting to replay.
The Witcher Trilogy Is Fixing Its Third Wheel
While Fool's Theory and CD Projekt Red are collaborating on the Witcher UE5 remake, CDPR has also announced exciting plans for a new Witcher game trilogy. The first game in this new trilogy, codenamed Polaris, will presumably follow a brand-new protagonist and lay the groundwork for two subsequent sequels. The franchise will also receive an original game codenamed Sirius, which will blend a single-player campaign with unique multiplayer elements. Yet another Witcher game codenamed Canis Majoris has also been teased, though it will not be a part of the trilogy following Polaris. With CD Projekt Red seemingly determined to expand the dark fantasy franchise in the coming years, a remake of the original Witcher game is a perfect way to get fans replaying Geralt of Rivia's original saga.
CD Projekt Red's new Witcher game may leave Geralt behind, but the remake will make it much more fun for fans to replay the White Wolf's entire trilogy. The first game's dated graphics and lackluster control scheme make it a chore to revisit, despite the fact that it plays an essential role in CD Projekt Red's beloved Witcher saga. With Fool's Theory's remake likely overhauling graphics and gameplay using Unreal Engine 5, the original Witcher adventure may actually become the funnest part of future franchise replays.
