Netflix confirms The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as magically enhanced monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, and the first season followed the events of short stories that take place before the main novels' start. As a result, the series received some criticism for its confusing timelines.

Nevertheless, The Witcher proved to be a hit, and the second season has been eagerly awaited by fans. Many were already bracing for a sizable hiatus due to the epic scope of the show, but matters were further complicated by the coronavirus pandemic. The Witcher season 2 was forced to stop filming multiple times throughout last year and suffered an additional setback when Cavill was injured on set. Finally, work on season 2 wrapped in early April, leaving only post-production work to be completed.

Though The Witcher season 2 has yet to receive an official premiere date, fans now have a general idea of when to expect it. Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed the late 2021 debuts of several new seasons during an investor video for the company's first-quarter financial results (via Deadline). This includes The Witcher, which Sarandos said will arrive in the fourth quarter of 2021 (or, October through December). The same was said for Cobra Kai season 4.

The Witcher season 2 arriving at the end of 2021 means there will officially be a 2-year gap between seasons. To be sure, that is a long wait for a television series, but there are other shows that will likely be waiting even longer because of the pandemic. Fellow Netflix hit Stranger Things season 4 might not premiere until 2022, so The Witcher should count itself lucky to be slotted in by the end of 2021.

Streaming has been a saving grace for many during the pandemic, yet several of the biggest streaming shows have found themselves delayed because of it. Thankfully, there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel. The Witcher is done with physical production and can now move on towards the final stages with an eye on debuting at the end of the year. Since it's April now, that still feels quite far away, but it's a more hopeful prospect than premiering next year. Fans will just have to keep their ears peeled for future updates.
