The iconic Teen Titans are about to get a revamped origin story in a brand-new series from DC Comics. One of DC's most popular teams, the Titans are experiencing a "present day" renaissance, and now fans will be treated to a new look at the team's early history.
DC is returning the Teen Titans to their "grooviest" roots this July in World's Finest: Teen Titans by Mark Waid and Emanuela Lupacchino. After the delightful success of the team's cameo appearances in Batman / Superman: World's Finest, this new World's Finest spin-off series will feature a modern retelling of the original Teen Titans, including Robin, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Speedy, Aqualad, Bumbleebee, and Mal Duncan. The publisher's description of World's Finest: Teen Titans follows:
World’s Finest: Teen Titans is spinning out of the pages of the runaway hit Batman/Superman: World’s Finest and features a modern retelling of the early adventures of the original Teen Titans! Led by Robin, the Boy Wonder, a new super-team has burst onto the scene—meet the Teen Titans, DC’s grooviest group full of super-teens with super-problems. When they’re not fighting alongside their Justice League mentors, they’re managing their image and cultivating the rabid fan base that helps them save the world…as, all the while, a danger from the shadows intends to tear these friends apart before they ever reach the big time. Before they were the Titans of the DCU, they were the Teen Titans, and you won’t want to miss this fresh take on their origins.
A Classic Teen Titans Story for the Contemporary Reader
Legendary writer Mark Waid reveals that much of this book will take its cues from the storytelling choices in Batman / Superman: World's Finest. According to Waid, this new World's Finest title will be "set in the not-too-distant past, when Robin led the team—including Bumblebee and Mal Duncan—as they answered calls for help from kids worldwide and dealt with their celebrity status. The real fun for the wonderful Ema Lupacchino and me is revealing many surprising secrets about who each of the Titans really is. Even longtime readers will be stunned by these untold revelations." Though the Teen Titans have come a long way since their Silver and Bronze Age iterations—including now replacing the Justice Leage as DC's flagship team—this series will take cues from the team's Bronze Age line-up, up to and including the classic sidekick-era costumes for all of these now-adult heroes.
Beyond capitalizing on both the success of Batman / Superman: World's Finest and the hype for the Titans title, DC is clearly embracing the nostalgia factor for this series, just as it did for the original Waid-written World's Finest title. Though DC's future has rarely been brighter (especially in the midst of the Dawn of DC initiative), fans will always long for more stories set in the early years of the DC Universe. This new World's Finest "line" of two books allows creators to tell new long form stories set in long-gone eras without sacrificing other ongoing stories. DC has likely hit a goldmine with this concept, and fans will certainly be excited to see Robin, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, and all the other Silver and Bronze Age Teen Titans working together once again.
