Iyo Sky shocked the wrestling world by defeating Rhea Ripley on WWE Monday Night Raw after the Elimination Chamber to become the new Women's World Champion. While Ripley appeared to be heading for a riptide off the top turnbuckle on Sky, she turned to women's Elimination Chamber winner Bianca Belair and said, "See you at WrestleMania, Bianca." That was all the time Sky needed to capitalize on Ripley being distracted. With Ripley distracted, Sky hits her with a hurricanrana and follows it with a moonsault for the victory. It feels like a shift of power in the women's division.
After the match, Ripley was interviewed by WWE's Jackie Redmond and was asked about her thoughts on losing the title. It was obvious that Ripley's past year had been an emotional roller coaster for her, and it was starting to catch up to her. After dealing with "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan for the past year, losing one of her only allies in Damian Priest to SmackDown, and now this - it's taking a toll on her mentally.
Rhea Ripley's World Title Loss Was Legitimately A Major Shock
Iyo Becomes Grand Slam Champion in Surprising Win Over Rhea Ripley
With Sky's astonishing victory, it leaves all sorts of questions as we head into WrestleMania 41. This victory adds another accomplishment to Sky's resume as she became a Grand Slam Champion in WWE. In her 7-plus-year career in WWE, she has now won every single women's title the company has to offer (except the newly introduced midcard titles). From NXT, to the main roster, she has become one of the faces of the company. While it was shocking the way she won the title, the crowd's reaction quickly switched from shocked to excited about her victory.
Since 2018, Ripley and Sky have faced each other one-on-one four times, with Sky being victorious in every single match-up. Sky was a heavy favorite to win the Women's Royal Rumble. When she didn't leave Indianapolis as the winner, she was then associated as a heavy favorite to win the Women's Elimination Chamber match. She lost her qualifying match by disqualification to Liv Morgan due to interference from Ripley. This left a feeling of uncertainty as to how Sky would be involved in WrestleMania 41. Her victory over Ripley comes as a shock, but it feels like it is trending towards a triple threat.
Is WWE Heading For a Triple Threat at WrestleMania 41?
Rhea Likely Uses Rematch Clause For Mania
More than likely, Ripley will use her rematch clause and insert herself into the Women's World title match at WrestleMania 41, making it a triple threat. She has a strong case anyway, since the referee didn't call for disqualification when Belair struck Ripley at ringside. This provides Ripley with a plausible case for this match to be elevated to a triple threat. We've seen some cases where former champions don't receive their rematch, but with so much on the line here, there is no reason not to give the top woman in the division her rematch.
The question isn't if Ripley will get a rematch; the bigger question is when. Hopefully, WWE doesn't schedule her rematch on Monday Night Raw. It makes a lot more sense for WWE to alter this rematch and make it a triple threat. They've got three of the biggest stars in the entire division in one match. That's a no-brainer formula for a five-star match. Two, it creates all sorts of opportunities to initiate a new feud coming out of the match. Three, with all three currently being babyfaces, it creates an opportunity for an astonishing heel turn.
Is Another Massive Heel Turn Coming After John Cena's
Is WWE Set to Turn Ripley Heel?
If we've learned anything from WWE, it is that during Paul "Triple H" Levesque's era, expect the unexpected. The recent heel turn from John Cena is a perfect example of how WWE enjoys swerving us. As a company, they've made it known that they read and follow everything being said online. For months now, people have speculated whether Belair was the one who attacked Jade Cargill on SmackDown. For now, it appears that Naomi was the one who attacked her, since Cargill got her revenge before the women's Elimination Chamber match started. So for the foreseeable future, it seems Belair is off the hook there.
The fans have been speculating about Belair's heel turn for so long. What if this is setting up for Ripley to return heel? With how popular she is with the WWE Universe, it would be a risky move to turn her heel. The same could be said for Cody Rhodes. Sometimes you're so over as a superstar, that it becomes too great of a risk to take. For Ripley, it's a little different since her most impressive run in her career was as a heel. She won the Royal Rumble as a heel and dethroned Charlotte Flair for the title at WrestleMania as a heel.
It would make sense because she's been letting her guard down and being too nice during her recent babyface run. Maybe she wants to return to her old ways that elevated her career to a new level in the first place. This would also be a great way to enhance her current character's persona even more. The decision to turn her heel instead of Belair would be a shocking development that would add some more excitement to the women's division going into and coming out of WWE WrestleMania 41.
