the ultimate sacrifice - and it looks to be Doc Holliday facing off with death in the final showdown.

Doc has long been driven by a sense of justice and loyalty. His bond with his friend Wyatt Earp motivated him to protect Earp’s descendants over a hundred years later. In his time in Purgatory, Doc has gone to hell and back for the Earp sisters, at one point even losing his immortality. He ended up selling his soul and becoming a vampire, but that turn of events helped him save Wynonna from Bulshar’s poison. Along the way, Doc has found a path to redemption from his former darker lifestyle and found not only the love of his life but a family for whom he would give up everything.

He followed Waverly into the Garden without hesitation to protect her when Wynonna couldn’t and emerged from the experience a different man than before. Far more at peace with himself than he was before entering the Garden, and despite fresh conflict with Wynonna, Doc has been tying up loose ends, making his peace and making Purgatory safer for his loved ones. He tried to broker peace with the Clantons, extended comion to the last human Clanton, Cleo, and rid the town of Amon after the latter attempted to kill the Earp sisters. In a key scene, Doc also forgives Nicole Haught for betraying him to the Clantons, understanding how her actions were motivated by love. All of Doc’s actions in season 4 are those of a man leaving no unfinished business behind.

Since the beginning of this season, it has been hinted that someone on Wynonna Earp was going to choose to pay the ultimate price for love. It won’t be Waverly, whose angelic heart and unconquerable love for her sister Wynonna and fiancee Nicole will prevail over her Dark Angel form.  Although Wynonna would gladly, perhaps too eagerly, lay down her life, Doc won’t let that happen. He understands the world needs Wynonna’s warrior heart to rid the world of demons so that one day she may be reunited with their child, baby Alice.

The only question is how his sacrifice will take place. If Waverly’s father Julian’s angel blood is still circulating within Doc, the Garden might accept him as a sacrifice in place of Waverly even though it rejected him earlier. Doc might even be fatally struck down by Dark Angel Waverly if he steps between her and someone else, most likely Wynonna. There’s nothing he won’t do to protect Wynonna.

If anyone on Wynonna Earp makes the ultimate sacrifice this season, Doc Holliday will be the one laying down his life for his greatest love. A promo for the following episodes shows Doc and Wynonna, dressed very unlike themselves, in a tender moment as though they are saying goodbye. It’s a safe bet that saving Wynonna and everyone who has come to mean so much to him is the outcome Doc finally gives up his immortality to achieve.
