"Days of Future Past" showed a world 30 years in the future, where the Sentinels had taken over the American Government, exterminating almost all super-powered heroes and villains - regardless of mutant status - with all other mutants kept in horrific concentration camps. The only surviving heroes like Wolverine, Storm, Kate, Colossus, Magneto, an adult Franklin Richards, and Rachel Summers hatch a plan to neutralize their power inhibitors, allowing Rachel to psychically send Kate's mind back into her childhood self. Eventually convincing the X-Men of 1980 of her story, Kate and the team head to Washington DC to stop Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants from killing Kelly. Even though the iconic storyline only lasted two issues, there have been multiple adaptations in several media, such as a Days of Future Past audiobook, and comic prequels and sequels.

"Days of Future Past" was the X-Men's first major foray into time travel, a recurring theme in the mutants' adventures since then. The storyline has been influential and groundbreaking, and it features the introduction of Rachel Summers, the daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey, who eventually traveled to the main Earth-621 timeline and has been a major character since. The new prequel series will attempt to fill in some of the missing gaps in the story of how the Sentinels gained control of the United States.

"Days of Future Past" was one of the first dystopian futures shown in Marvel Comics, and it made an intense impact on readers when it debuted in 1981, and has remained influential in the 40 years since.

While "Days of Future Past" remains a beloved and acclaimed classic X-Men tale, there have been many unanswered questions and unexplored stories from the brief two issues it occurred within, and this new limited series from Marvel Comics will finally explore those tragic lost years.
