Warning: Contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #2!!Since the founding of the post-Krakoan era of the franchise; the school is now Greymalkin Prison, and the mutant known as Siryn has been revealed as its first prisoner.

Uncanny X-Men #2 – written by Gail Simone, with art by David Marquez – offered a look inside the horrifying Graymalkin Prison, created from the shell of the former Xavier Institute. As the nightmarish creature called "the Hag" hunts mutants to drag them to confinement, Dr. Ellis approaches the first of her mutant inmates: Theresa Cassidy, aka Siryn.

X-Men villain Dr Ellis approaches an imprisoned Siryn and tries to bargain with her.

Claiming Siryn as a prisoner is a bold move for Greymalkin Prison, and a major twist for this new Uncanny X-Men run, hinting at how dangerous the people in charge of it truly are.

GREYMALKIN PRISON Reveals Its First Prisoner: SIRYN.

Uncanny X-Men #2 – Written By Gail Simone; Art By David Marquez, Matthew Wilson, & Clayton Cowles

Theresa Cassidy, or Siryn, made her debut back in Spider-Woman #37. She’s gone from a former criminal at Black Tom’s side to the rightful daughter of Sean Cassidy, aka Banshee. She inherited her father’s abilities and can generate sonic screams, propel herself via sonic flight, and use hypnosis. After training with the X-Men, and subsequently working with the Fallen Angels, X-Force, and X-Factor Investigations, and surviving heavy combat against Juggernaut, Morlocks, and many others, she has become a formidable combatant. While Siryn is sometimes easily silenced, at her full power she can generate so much energy that even Dazzler is overloaded.

The Morrigan is a goddess of war and death, first debuted in Black Knight (1990) #3, that requires a female host body. The entity es to a new vessel when the former one is killed, and Theresa Cassidy became the Morrigan’s host after using a sonic scream on her existing one.

Along with her mutant abilities, one of Theresa's greatest strengths is her connection with others. Her friendships and relationships have carried her forward, pulling her through the worst events of her life, and she does the same in kind. Her encounter with the Morrigan demonstrated this most of all. Theresa took the Morrigan's essence into herself for the sake of healing her friend, Lorna Dane, from the fragile mental state she'd lapsed into. Siryn took this further by agreeing to sacrifice herself literally thousands of times to save Krakoa from the massacre that Morrigan promised, and it was her allies who freed her for good.

Shadowy New Villain Dr. Ellis Is Underestimating Siryn’s X-Men Connections

Theresa Cassidy Has Strong Allies

Dr. Ellis hasn't captured a novice, and while she may intend to try to bend that to her advantage, it likely won't be as simple as she expects.

It's clear by their brief interaction that Dr. Ellis intends to manipulate Theresa into doing something on behalf of Greymalkin Prison, but it's hardly Siryn's first run-in with that kind of pressure. She proved through her deal with the Morrigan that she's willing to go through great personal suffering if it means saving her fellow mutants, and suffering is certainly what Dr. Ellis is promising. She's threatened considerable physical harm to Theresa, perhaps not realizing that Banshee's daughter has already willingly undergone several deaths for the sake of others. She is neither weak, nor easily influenced in a long-term sense.

Moreover, Theresa's absence is something that will be noticed. Greymalkin Prison is hardly staying off the radar. The young mutants they're dragging in may not have powerful backing, but Siryn certainly does. She's Banshee's daughter and long-time friend of Polaris, Monet, Strong Guy, and Multiple Man, in addition to ing several major teams. Dr. Ellis hasn't captured a novice, and while she may intend to try to bend that to her advantage, it likely won't be as simple as she expects. Even if Theresa agrees to her demands, her friends already freed her from a literal Goddess, making Dr. Ellis seem like the amateur.

Greymalkin Prison Becomes More Dangerous The Longer It Exists

The X-Men Must Act Fast

Siryn isn't Greymalkin Prison's only captive, just the first whose identity has been revealed. The Hag is clearly supplying Dr. Ellis with new inmates, and will continue until something stops the operation. The longer the prison is allowed to stand, the greater the threat becomes. Mutantkind knows that the longer their enemies are allowed to fester and plan, the harder they are to overcome. Not every prisoner will be a Theresa Cassidy, and the longer Dr. Ellis is allowed to operate, the more likely it becomes that she'll find what she's looking for.

Siryn may be able to save herself from the horrors of Greymalkin Prison, or at least resist them, but the X-Men need to move fast and eliminate the threat for the sake of all mutantkind.

This precarious situation for Siryn has thrust her into a prominent role in the X-franchise's rebooted era. Fans of the character will be excited to know how this arc plays out, for both Theresa and Dr. Ellis. Right now, the antagonist is already bold enough to try turning one of the former X-Men into a "trustee." As the first revealed inmate, Siryn may be able to save herself from the horrors of Greymalkin Prison, or at least resist them, but the X-Men need to move fast and eliminate the threat for the sake of all mutantkind.
