The X-Men’s Nightcrawler just got his darkest redesign ever in a nightmare fuel cosplay shoot. For 50 years, Nightcrawler has been a fan-favorite member of the X-Men. He is one of the most complex of the team, resembling a demon but also deeply religious. Nightcrawler is a fun, swash-buckling character, but a new cosplay shot from theincrediblecosplayer unlocks the Fuzzy Elf’s nightmarish potential.

Nycosplayer unveiled the shoot, featuring theincrediblecosplayer a post on Instagram. Consisting of four photos, the shoot envisions Nightcrawler as a bloodthirsty zombie. In two of the photos, the zombie Nightcrawler is clutching a heavily adorned wrought-iron cross, a nod to his Catholicism. Nightcrawler then lunges in the other two photos. Theincrediblecosplayer's makeup for the shoot was on-point as well, and he added flair by including two Nightcrawler quotes that speak to his character: one about his appearance, and another about his faith. Theincrediblecosplayer's shoot is a dark love letter to Nightcrawler and all his contradictions.

Nightcrawler, the X-Men's Premiere Teleporter, Explained

This, coupled with his demonic appearance, could have made Nightcrawler into a villain, but instead he is a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky-kind of guy.

Kurt Wagner, AKA Nightcrawler, has been a pillar of the X-Men as well as Earth’s larger mutant community for five decades. Created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, and debuting in the landmark Giant Size X-Men #1, Nightcrawler’s mutant ability allows him to teleport through space by slipping in and out of another dimension. When Nightcrawler uses his power, it creates a sulfur-like smell. This, coupled with his demonic appearance, could have made Nightcrawler into a villain, but instead he is a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky-kind of guy. Nightcrawler is not only a fan-favorite, but also popular with creators as well.

Nightcrawler has appeared twice in live action: in X2, where he was played by Alan Cumming and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, potrayed by Kodi Smit-Mhee. Cumming will return as Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday.

Despite Nightcrawler’s affable nature and cool powers, his early life was not easy. When fans first met Kurt in the aforementioned Giant Size X-Men #1, he was fleeing a mob trying to kill him, believing him to be a demon. In Nightcrawler’s earliest appearances, before Chris Claremont and his collaborators had a firm handle on the character, he was portrayed as dark and grim. Thankfully, this was quickly abandoned, and Nightcrawler found his footing. The addition of Nightcrawler’s deep faith gave him layers, ones not normally seen in mainstream superhero comics.

Nightcrawler as a Zombie Is a Nightmarish Concept

Zombie Nightcrawler Could Create a Full-Blown Epidemic Quickly

And Nightcrawler’s multitudes collide in nycosplayer’s shoot with theincredibleccosplayer. Nightcrawler undeniably resembles a demon, but is a good person overall, yet this photoshoot dispenses with the character’s notions of morality and self-control. The zombified Nightcrawler realizes his worst nightmares: of actually becoming something that people are justified to hate and fear. Nightcrawler’s decency and goodness have been stripped from him, leaving Kurt a terrifying creature of darkness. Yet all hope may not be lost, as Kurt grasps a cross, perhaps searching for the inner strength to resist the evil that has overtaken him.

The Marvel Universe is right to fear the zombie Nightcrawler. While the exact parameters of Nightcrawler’s powers have fluctuated over the past 50 years, he has always been able to teleport great distances. Nightcrawler always has the element of surprise over his opponents thanks to his powers, and in the hands of a zombie variant, this becomes a nightmarish scenario: a teleporting zombie with the ability to spread his evil over a large area very quickly.
