Marvel's X-Men have some truly incredible powers, from the ability to command the weather to warping reality itself. However, sooner or later those types of abilities bring Marvel's mutants to the attention of the gods themselves, and not all of Marvel's deities are happy about the competition. The X-Men have faced dark gods, traitorous Asgardians, and cosmic forces, and have even allied with some of Earth's gods and godlike beings.

Here are the 15 most powerful gods in X-Men lore. While all Marvel's gods exist in the same world as the X-Men, we're only considering those who have a recurring presence in mutant lore or have made significant contributions to the journeys and powers of notable X-Men.

15 Hrimhari

The Asgardian God Fell for an X-Men Hero

Hrimhari is a Wolf God from Asgardian legend and a descendant of the monstrous Fenris. Despite his heritage, Hrimhari is an honorable warrior who fell in love with New Mutants and X-Force hero Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, resulting in the birth of their son Tier. Though currently dead, Hrimhari has taken multiple opportunities to revisit the world of the living and see Wolfsbane. Incredibly strong and durable, Hrimhari also has a healing factor and enhanced senses.

14 Kierrok the Damned and the N'Garai

The X-Men Can't Escape This Army of Dark Gods

The N'Garai are some of the oldest beings in Marvel lore - the original demons created by the Elder God Chthon, and ruled over by their personal gods and leaders the Mabdhara. The X-Men have faced the N'Garai multiple times, partly due to the pure bad luck of having a mystical Cairn on the grounds of the Xavier School that connects to their hellish dimension. Wolverine and Kitty Pryde fought the most iconic battles against the N'Garai, with their Mabdhara leader Kierrok the Damned being a particular threat, able to absorb life energy from mortals.

13 Hope Summers and Exodus

The 'Mutant Messiah' Isn't as Scary as Her Priest

Following the 'Decimation' of mutants caused by the Scarlet Witch, there were no more mutant births until the emergence of Hope Summers - a child later revealed to have been created by the Phoenix Force as a way of bringing back the X-gene. While Hope Summers has never seen herself as a god, her chief follower Exodus disagrees. A former Crusader, Exodus has warped Catholic doctrine, casting the villainous Apocalypse as the devil and Hope as the mutant messiah. Exodus feeds on faith, growing powerful by channeling religious belief.

In Immortal X-Men #3 (from Kieron Gillen, Lucas Werneck and Dijjo Lima), fans saw that Exodus could one day become a cosmic god of unsured power, having spread the religion of Hope across the galaxy. In Sins of Sinister, schisms within his religion create multiple godlike Exoduses, whose battles erase entire solar systems. This version of Exodus, infected by Mister Sinister's evil, shattered Hope and used her body as a religious artifact, channeling faith in the 'Mutant Messiah' without actually having to answer to her.

12 Tumult

The Mutants of Arakko Are So Powerful, Even Their Gods Fear Them

Thanks to spending millennia trapped in the demonic realm of Amenth, the mutants of Arakko are a warrior culture with strict rules around combat and honor. After settling on Mars, the Arakki mutants began summoning gods, taking their claims of divinity as a direct challenge and killing them in ritual battles. One god who escaped such a death was Tumult - a trickster god who swapped bodies with his villainous worshiper Switch, escaping the death intended by the Arakki. Tumult was created by the Omega mutant Ora Serrata, and is a composite being who has the powers (and physical features) of multiple gods, including Loki and Anansi.

While X-Men has many god-tier mutants, several of Stan Lee's original characters are STILL the most powerful in the franchise.

11 Storm, aka Ororo Munroe

Storm Has Risen from Mutant Hero to Cosmic God

Formerly an Omega-level mutant, Storm later ascended to godhood thanks to her total control over the weather and her ancient magical bloodline. While Storm has been worshiped by various groups in Africa for years, she has recently become the herald of Eternity itself, officially crossing the line into being a divine being and taking on the title of the Eternal Storm (in Storm Volume 5, from Murewa Ayodele and Lucas Werneck.) Storm was also recently asked by Thor to replace him on the Avengers roster so that the team would still have a storm god at their side.

Storm is one of the few individuals worthy to lift Mjolnir, and first achieved godhood while wielding Thor's hammer.

10 The Morrigan

The Goddess of Death Took Offense to the Ultimate Mutant Power

The Celtic goddess of death and battle, Morrigan is a longtime enemy of X-Factor, and especially of the hero Theresa Cassidy, aka Siryn. While Morrigan seemingly reached an agreement with the X-Men after the Siryn's father Banshee became her new host, she returned as an enemy during the Krakoan Era, taking offense at the X-Men 'defeating' death via their resurrection technology. Morrigan terrorized and slaughtered mutants using Siryn as her pawn. Siryn was ultimately saved thanks to Shatterstar, but it's a safe bet the Morrigan will return sooner or later.

9 Cyttorak

Juggernaut's Patron Is a Dark God of Chaos and Destruction

The demon god Cyttorak rules the Crimson Cosmos, choosing avatars on Earth to become his 'Juggernaut' and feed him power by causing destruction and chaos. Cyttorak has had several avatars in X-Men lore, but the most notable have been Cain Marko - a former enemy of the X-Men - and the heroic Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus. Within the Crimson Cosmos, Cyttorak is all-powerful, and not even the Phoenix Force can override his decrees.

Cyttorak has an extensive family of gods including Callix, Cyra and Cradios, who each represent the inevitability of different aspects of existence, and is a sometime patron of Doctor Strange - the power source behind his often-used 'Crimson Bands of Cyttorak' spell. Recently, Cyttorak revealed a formerly unknown level of empathy, sacrificing himself in The Amazing Spider-Man #70 (Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinness) to close off a gateway that was exposing Earth to an otherworldly disease known as the Blight.

X-Men's most powerful mutants are termed 'Omega-level,' but there IS a category beyond even that - one precious few heroes have achieved.

8 Loki Laufeyson

Asgard's God of Mischief Has Transformed Several Iconic X-Men

While Loki has obviously starred in more Thor comics than X-Men, his few interactions with the X-Men have had surprisingly significant outcomes. In X-Factor #15 (Louise Simonson and Walter Simonson), Loki experimented on Iceman, unlocking a new level of the hero's powers and starting him on his journey to Omega-mutant status. Loki likewise schemed for Storm to take ownership of Thor's hammer Mjolnir, causing a friendship to develop between the X-Men and Thor, who has since asked Storm to wield his hammer multiple times.

7 Hela

Asgard's Goddess of Death Is a Major New Mutants Antagonist

The Asgardian Goddess of Death, Hela has clashed with the X-Men multiple times, becoming a particular enemy of the spin-off X-Factor team after hiring them to capture her former servant Pip the Troll (they recruited him instead.) She revealed the full extent of Darwin's powers in X-Factor #212 (Peter David and Emanuela Lupacchino) when he became a god to stop her touch killing him, and empowered Dani Moonstar as a Valkyrie in Dark Avengers #8 (Matt Fraction and Luke Ross), pushing multiple heroes to their most powerful forms.

6 Celestials

The Celestials Are the Source of the Mutant Gene

The Celestials are part of Marvel's cosmic ecosystem - a race of pseudo-gods who encourage evolution and genetic diversity across the universe. Indeed, one of the reasons Earth has so many superhumans is that a Celestial known as the Progenitor died on Earth, infecting the planet with exotic energy. AXE: Judgment Day revealed this is what ultimately gave rise to Homo Superior and the X-gene, though it also caused many other forms of superhuman to develop.

In the modern day, the Celestials have crossed paths with the X-Men many times, with mutant heroes sending the celestial gods back into space, either reassured that Earth is in good hands or threatened into retreat - Rogue personally pushed a Celestial Executioner out of orbit to prevent it destroying Earth (having absorbed all the Avengers' powers to do it.) Perhaps the biggest contribution that the Celestials have made to X-Men lore was empowering Apocalypse, who they chose to act as their steward on Earth, ensuring that evolution continues to play out and the mutant genome doesn't become stagnant.
