For the First Time, Charles Xavier Chooses His Daughter Over His X-Men

Uncanny X-Men #11 – Written By Gail Simone; Art By Andrei Bressan; Color By Matthew Wilson; Lettering By Clayton Cowles

A shell-shocked Professor X is surrounded by memories of the Shi'ar Majestrix, Lilandra

More often than not, Charles Xavier has chosen his X-Men and his aspirations over his own children, and while Charles doesn’t share a strained relationship with his daughter in the same way he does Legion, Charles has rarely, if ever, interacted with Xandra. The first time Charles and Xandra made was in her death, when she projected a scream for help to her advisors and Professor X. Now Charles Xavier’s connection with Xandra is finally being expanded upon as he acknowledges the existence of his daughter; more importantly, it’s hinted he will be breaking out to save her.

Professor X + Magneto: Why Cyclops Is the Perfect Blend of X-Men's Iconic Leaders

Cyclops has remained a pivotal figure in X-Men comics in part because of the way he has synthesized the best of both Charles Xavier & Magneto.

With the start of the X-Manhunt crossover event, Charles is making a bold escape from Graymalkin to rescue his daughter as a splinter group of Shi’ar attempt an insurrection. Charles Xavier’s Daughter Is The Child Of Powerful Parents – Making Her Omega-Level Before Birth

Charles Is Finally Stepping Up To Protect Is Alien Daughter

X-Men Xavier (left) and his daughter Xandra (right.)

Xandra is the daughter of Charles Xavier and his long-time lover, the now-deceased Empress Lilandra of the Shi’ar Empire, but Xandra had an unorthodox way of being conceived as she was created during a time when both Charles Xavier and Lilandra were dead. After Vulcan, Cyclops’ evil omega-level brother, had killed Lilandra and usurped the Shi’ar throne, the leader of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, Gladiator, took the DNA of the empress and Charles to form an egg. Even before Xandra was born, her existence caused an uproar throughout the galaxy.

Surprisingly, Xavier has never had any prominent interactions with his daughter...until now.

In Mr. & Mrs. X – written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Jan Bazaldua – Rogue and Gambit’s honeymoon was cut short so they could help protect the egg. Xandra showed Omega-level potential even before she hatched, which sparked an intergalactic back-and-forth to retrieve the royal heir. When she emerged, she instantly read the minds of Rogue and Gambit to learn about her lineage and alter her appearance to emulate her parents. Xandra eventually returned to the Shi’ar Empire, and Gladiator stepped down as Majestor of the Shi’ar Empire due to his loyalty to the royal family, making Xandra the new empress.

Though Xandra quickly descended to the throne as a member of the royal family, there was a lot of strife that came from a half-mutant acquiring the throne, which has continued into Uncanny X-Men #11. During the Krakoa era, Xandra was killed by her guards for technically committing treason and revealing previously hidden information, but during her death, she telepathically sent her genetic code to her father, to which Charles immediately had the Five resurrect her. Surprisingly, Xavier has never had any major interactions with his daughter, until now, but his immediate willingness to resurrect Xandra shows he does care for her.

Professor X its That He Was Often A Good Teacher, But Never A Good Father

Charles Xavier Was More Paternal With The X-Men Than His Bio-Children

Charles Xavier is the founder and mentor to the X-Men, and this role has made him a father figure to many of the young mutants he takes in, especially his long-time student, Cyclops, but his “parenting” methods have often been under scrutiny. Cyclops was one of his most loyal students and shared a father-son-like dynamic with Xavier. However, Professor X’s questionable choices, such as enlisting Cyclops into dangerous battles as a teenager and making him forget the supposed death of his brother Vulcan, among other things, have severely strained their relationship.

The fact that Charles is about to choose his child over the safety of his X-Men marks a rare moment in X-Men history.

It’s undeniable that Charles loves his X-Men as the main reason he’s chosen to remain imprisoned is to protect them, though it’s also worth noting that his closeness to his X-Men has made it apparent that he often neglects his biological children. His son Legion is a prime example of how Charles has mismanaged his relationship with his children, with Charles even attempting to stop the resurrection of Legion because of Legion’s history of mental instability. The fact that Charles is about to choose his child over the safety of Cyclops and his X-Men marks a rare moment in X-Men history.
