Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Yellowstone season 5 part B, episode 9, "Desire Is All You Need"!
Chief Thomas Rainwater's path to acquiring the Dutton ranch just got a little more open in Kevin Costner's John Dutton and most of his family throughout the show's run, wanting to reclaim the land the titular ranch is built on for his people. Along the way, however, he and the Dutton family have grown closer to one another when their interests have aligned, including stopping the building of a pipeline through the reservation.
Rainwater has also been closely involved in Kayce and Monica's lives, ing them through the grief process of losing their son and initiating the former in the warrior ways of his tribe. The Yellowstone season 5 part B premiere dropped the bombshell that John has died in what appears to be a suicide, but is actually a hit carried out by the fixers Jamie asked Sarah about. With Kayce now left in charge and the governor's seat vacant, Rainwater will have to decide where his allegiances and priorities lie.

5 Things That Must Happen In Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 To Give The Show A Great Ending
In order for Yellowstone season 5, part 2 to close out the series on a high note, it needs to resolve several key plot threads in a satisfying way.
Alongside Birmingham, the Yellowstone season 5 part B cast includes the returns of Wes Bentley as Jamie, Kelly Reilley as Beth, Luke Grimes as Kayce, Kelsey Asbille as Monica, Cole Ha as Rip, Brecken Merrill as Tate, Jefferson White, Ryan Bingham, Wendy Moniz, Forrie J. Smith and Dawn Oliveri. With stakes at the highest they've been and characters pushed to the brink of their planning, the show is going out on a high note.
In anticipation of the show's premiere, Screen Rant interviewed Gil Birmingham to discuss Yellowstone season 5 part B, what John's absence will mean for Rainwater's planning to get the land back, what it was like working with redacted scripts, how the storyline between him and Grimes' Kayce will continue to evolve, and his thoughts on a reservation-set spinoff.
There Will Be "So Many Different Dynamics" For Audiences To Follow In Part B
"...we get redacted scripts..."
Screen Rant: First and foremost, I'd love to talk about John's absence, it's a big thing this season. Obviously, he and Thomas have always been playing chess about who can ultimately have the land. With John's absence this season, how is that going to impact his approach to their sort of battle? Is it going to embolden him and his power moves?
Gil Birmingham: Well, there's so many different dynamics that occur that I'm not privy to. You know, we get redacted scripts, so I'm not sure what the family is doing, or any of the other actors and their storylines. I only know the scenes that I worked on. But aside from that, John and I, or John and Rainwater, would generally have maybe one scene per season, and a lot of the rest of it was the build up to that, or the backstory of what the confrontation was going to lead them into their finally meeting face to face to have a discussion about it. Where we left it off last season, it seemed like there was more they had in common than not. As governor, he was trying to stop the pipeline and informing people that this could be detrimental to the land, so we've always had a respect for each other in of the sacredness of land, just for different reasons. His is a legacy of family, of ownership, and mine is ancestral. And that's, I think, what creates great drama.
Birmingham Loves The "Beautiful Storyline" Between Kayce & Rainwater
"...he's pulled on both sides."
I also love that in the first half of this season, as well as in prior seasons, we've seen a lot of respect between your character and Kayce, especially in part A, as you've really helped him and Monica deal with their loss. What can you tell me about that dynamic going into the back half of episodes of this season?
Gil Birmingham: You know, I love that storyline, because there's an affinity that Rainwater will have, simply because of the relationship that Monica has with Kayce, and Kayce's biological attachment to this Dutton family. But I feel he's more open, I think, to understanding what the plight is for the Indigenous people on the reservation, because he's married to a Native woman, and he's pulled on both sides. But it's given him an opportunity to kind of see both sides, and that's actually happened since the very first episode, when he was fighting for the cattle, I love to recall that. But, yeah, it's a beautiful storyline, and Luke was cast perfectly for it.
Birmingham Is Always Challenging Sheridan To "Arm-Wrestling Contests" To Get A Spinoff
"...he might be open to suggestions..."
I also give a lot of credit to Taylor for conceiving that and for giving the Indigenous characters so much screen time. I'd love to hear if you have ever had talks with him about possibly branching off into your own spinoff, since the Yellowstone universe continues to grow with so many different shows.
Gil Birmingham: Yeah, I always challenge him in arm wrestling contests to make sure one of those things happen. [Chuckles] Taylor is such an independent and prolific mind, he might be open to suggestions, and I'm sure it's not just a biased position that I would love that to happen, but I've heard friends in his circle say as much. So, it's not lost on him, but he has so much on his plate already, and I guess if the time is right, if it ferments right, then he might follow that course of events, and that would be fantastic.
