potential Star Trek 4, while her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still uncertain after the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She will next be seen in 2025's Avatar: Fire and Ash.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Saldaña itted that it is difficult to always play non-human species in science fiction films. Her characters in Avatar and the MCU require her to wear a lot of makeup, so she would want any future sci-fi characters to be human. Read Saldaña's full quote below:

I can’t ever say that I won’t ever go to space. I love being in space. I would like to just be a human in space. I don’t see myself going through the three to four hours every morning of makeup. I’m so concerned about just the chemicals and stuff that you’re putting into your system for long periods of time, because we shoot these films in a period of five months. But I love science fiction.

What Zoe Saldaña's Comments Mean For Her Science Fiction Future

Saldaña Plans To Star In Future Avatar & Star Trek Movies

Saldaña played the major role of Neytiri, a Na'vi, in the first two Avatar movies. There are currently three more Avatar movies that are scheduled to be released over the next several years. While it is not guaranteed that Neytiri will survive and appear in all films, she will likely continue to play a major role moving forward. Therefore, since Saldaña is already committed to a non-human role in the Avatar series, perhaps she will decide not to return as Gamora in the MCU. While Gamora is still alive in the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concludes her story with Chris Pratt's Peter Quill.

It is possible that her desire to portray a human in a science fiction film led Saldaña to sign on for Star Trek 4 after previously portraying Starfleet officer Nyota Uhura in 2009's Star Trek reboot and its two sequels. Development on Star Trek 4, which will take place on the Kelvin timeline, has stalled since 2016's Beyond. However, given Saldaña's recent comments, it appears that the fourth installment is finally moving forward with some momentum.

It is impressive how many major science fiction franchises Saldaña has starred in throughout her career. While she may be less enthusiastic about spending long hours in the makeup chair nowadays, it is clear that she will remain a major part of the sci-fi genre for many years to come. It would be disappointing if Saldaña never returned as Gamora in the MCU, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did provide her character with a satisfying ending. Plus, her roles in the Avatar and Star Trek movies should appease fans.
